Cape Cod Smart Transportation Week

June 24-30, 2012

BARNSTABLE COUNTY, MA—The Cape Cod Commission (CCC) and the Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority (CCRTA) are partnering again this month to coordinate activities that highlight smart transportation on Cape Cod. The partners, supported by Barnstable County Regional Government, Cape Air, the Barnstable Municipal Airport, the Plymouth & Brockton Street Railway Co., Hy-Line Cruises, The Steamship Authority, MassBike, and Cape Cod Railroad, are celebrating CAPE COD SMART TRANSPORTATION WEEK 2012 from June 24 through June 30. Activities designed to promote the use of public transit, buses, planes, trains, ferries, bicycles, and walking trails and paths will take place throughout the week.

“The use of smarter transportation options reduces traffic and parking congestion, air pollution, carbon footprints, and greenhouse gas emissions,” explains Cape Cod Commission Technical Services Director Glenn Cannon. “With the summer season about to begin, there’s no better time to remind residents and visitors that making use of smarter transportation options will benefit everyone.”

Throughout the year, the CCC and CCRTA plan for and help implement improvements to the region’s transportation infrastructure and services that reduce single-occupant vehicles on area roads. Annually, the Barnstable County Commissioners designate the last week of June as Cape Cod Smart Transportation Week.

“Smart Transportation Week is a fun way to show how all of the transportation modes are working together to increase seamless connectivity and make Cape Cod a car-free destination. We all continue to work on projects that benefit transportation as a whole and hope that this week allows the public to try out one of our transportation services,” said CCRTA Administrator Thomas S. Cahir.

“By showcasing and using transportation alternatives, we can all enjoy safer trips and a healthier environment,” adds Cannon.
