Just thinking

I saw this article: Visualizing America’s Absurd Parking Requirements. Part of it deals with residential parking requirements. Which got me thinking, our residential parking requirements could use some rethinking. We require 2 parking spaces regardless of the number of bedrooms.

Our parking requirements call for spaces of 9 feet by 20 feet, 180 sf per parking space. We also require 24 foot wide aisles. Assigning a minimum of half that area to each adjacent parking space means each parking space consumes 288 sf. A one-bedroom apartment (average size 700 sf) would require a minimum of 576 sf of paved parking.

We require this even for deed restricted affordable housing.

We require this even though we do not require any dedicated play areas.

Perhaps it is time to rethink site design.
