Not sure how significant this is, the Chatham Selectmen simply recognized what is in fact true, the new maps are not yet adopted by the Federal Government and do not set current policy. As with 2009 and 2011, strict enforcement of the new maps today could prove fruitless. HOWEVER, they provide, as did the 2009 ones, strong guidance on what the actual flood zone will be and people are advised to look to them for guidance if you are planning home improvements. If you are looking to spend some money fixing up your house, you want to look at these maps to determine whether you should elevate your structure to reduce your flood exposure and insurance costs.
Remember, in May 2013 we adopted a new definition of building height that takes into account Base Flood Elevation. Relaxing this standard was geared to encourage people to flood proof their homes.
