The town has two active applicants and we have had inquiries from some of the others seeking permits on Cape Cod. The State process places the town in an awkward situation. The State will balance the licenses they issue geographically to ensure wide access to these facilities. However, only Dennis has adopted, and had the state approve, its Medical Marijuana Dispensary Zoning. While Mashpee (last night) and Provincetown (tonight) are both close to opening their communities to these facilities, the present licensing arrangement requires a local permit in hand as part of the next level of review.
So, Dennis could see all six Barnstable County applicants file for permits. We could approve all six if they comply with all of our requirements. Then, the state will knock out five of those applicants, after significant expenditure of their resources, from consideration.
While we would prefer to be dealing with only one applicant, with a final license in hand, that option is not available to the town. The first hearings are expected to take place on November 18th at the Dennis Senior Center. This is contingent upon, the applications for these facilities being filed on October 23rd.
We will keep you posted.
